Gavin "Gav" Mac Nair
About Gavin (Gav) Mac Nair. Gavin grew up in a small village on the frontier of England and Scotland. At this time in history the English were in the process of bending the Scots to their will. Gavin's father soon found himself on the wrong side and was forced to "sell" his son into indentured servitude to pay off a debt. This was a common way for the English to force their subjects into obedience. The "indentured" family member would in effect be a hostage to prevent sedition from the crown.
Because Gavin could read and write he was favored by his English hosts whom often could not read themselves. He was passed from one English master to another and eventually found himself onboard an English Privateer. Gavin served as the captain's cabin boy and eventually as "mate." Gavin was trusted by his captain to never cross him openly. This was because Gavin, born a Scott, could never assume captaincy in the English royal navy. As cabin boy and mate Gavin learned some basic leadership skills, navigation, geography, and how to handle himself onboard a ship.
It is Gavin's desire to someday become a real officer aboard a ship. This may not happen on an English ship because of his lineage but is not impossible. The English sell commissions regardless of ability or lineage. If Gavin could amass enough gold he may someday buy himself a commission. Or maybe he could earn a commission onboard another nations' vessel. Or, if no nation will oblige him, he will become an officer on his own...
